What does Toyota’s TRD Edition mean?

You might have seen the TRD badging on many Toyota models. Some of you may have guessed that it could be a limited-run special edition of that particular model. But have you ever wanted to know what Toyota’s TRD stands for and what extra it brings? If so, then let Bob Smith Toyota in La Crescenta, CA demystify Toyota’s famed TRD package for you. What does TRD Stand for?

TRD means “Toyota Racing Development.” The acronym comes as more of a convenience package than a trim level and brings some specially tuned parts and cosmetic enhancements for various Toyota vehicles. You get more powerful drivetrains, upgraded shocks, exhausts, and specialized features for racing and off-roading. And obviously, the trucks get the off-roading bits, while the sedans get the racing features.

There are various trim levels available within the TRD segment:

  • TRD
  • TRD Sport
  • TRD Off-Road
  • TRD Off-Road Premium
  • TRD Pro

Toyota Camry and Avalon TRD

The Toyota Camry and Toyota Avalon sedans can be availed with the standard TRD package which includes Toyota factory enhanced tuning, special exhaust system, TRD badging in Red on the grille, and a more powerful engine 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 301 hp. These also include blacked-out wheel alloys and racing brakes which makes both look edgier than their regular sedan counterparts.

TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro

TRD Sport is available on the Toyota Sequoia SUV and brings some sporty upgrades like black leather seats, black alloys, and a sportier sounding exhaust, while TRD Pro, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Off-Road Premium packages bring off-road tuning, all-wheel-drive, specialized Fox shocks, and designated wheel and tires as standard. Trucks with TRD Packages are almost unrivaled in terms of off-road ability.

Of course, the additions that the TRD package brings is going to bump up the prices a bit. Depending on the number of enhancements and the TRD trim levels the prices can be anywhere from $3000 to up to $15,000 more than the normal trims, but you do get a lot for the upgrade. TRD is for those who are looking for more from their Toyota and it surely won’t disappoint.
